Philly Cheesesteak Wontons

These wontons take the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak and wrap them up in a crispy, bite-sized package. The combination of savory steak, melted cheese, and the slight tang of Cheese Whiz, all nestled within a crunchy wonton wrapper, creates a unique and irresistible appetizer. They're perfect for parties, game nights, or any time you're craving a taste of Philly in a fun, new way!

The inspiration for this recipe comes from the iconic Philly cheesesteak, but with a playful twist. The traditional steak, onions, and peppers are all there, but instead of a hoagie roll, they're cozied up in a crispy wonton wrapper. The addition of Cheese Whiz adds a creamy, cheesy element that's both nostalgic and delicious. Each bite delivers a burst of savory goodness, with the textures ranging from the crunchy wonton to the tender steak and the gooey cheese. It's a delightful fusion of familiar flavors and exciting new forms.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound thinly sliced steak (ribeye or sirloin recommended)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces Cheese Whiz
  • 1 cup shredded provolone cheese
  • 1 package (about 50) wonton wrappers
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil, for frying (if frying) or cooking spray (if baking)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Filling:

    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Add sliced onions and bell peppers and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
    • Add the thinly sliced steak to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes.
    • Stir in Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder.
    • Reduce heat to low and stir in the Cheese Whiz until melted and smooth.
    • Remove from heat and stir in the shredded provolone cheese.
  2. Assemble the Wontons:

    • Lay out a wonton wrapper.
    • Place about 1-2 tablespoons of the Philly cheesesteak filling in the center of the wrapper.
    • Moisten the edges of the wonton wrapper with a little water.

    • Fold the wonton wrapper in half diagonally to form a triangle. Press the edges firmly to seal. You can also experiment with other wonton shapes, like folding them into little purses or rectangles.
  3. Cook the Wontons (Choose your method):

    • Frying:
      • Heat about 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
      • Carefully add the wontons in batches (don't overcrowd the pot) and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
      • Remove the wontons with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
    • Baking:
      • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
      • Lightly spray a baking sheet with cooking spray.
      • Arrange the wontons on the baking sheet in a single layer.
      • Spray the wontons lightly with cooking spray.
      • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway through.
  4. Serve: Serve the Philly Cheesesteak Wontons hot. They're delicious on their own, but you can also serve them with dipping sauces like:

    • Spicy ketchup
    • Ranch dressing
    • Chipotle mayo
    • A simple cheese sauce
