Recipe: Spicy Beef Teriyaki with Buldak Kick!

Yields: 4 servings Prep time: 30 minutes (plus marinating time) Cook time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • For the Beef 1.5 lb sirloin steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • For the Marinade/Sauce:
    • 1/2 cup soy sauce
    • 1/4 cup mirin (sweet rice wine)
    • 2 tablespoons sake (or dry sherry)
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1-3 tablespoons Buldak sauce (adjust to your spice preference)
    • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
    • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (for thickening)
  • For Garnish:
    • Sesame seeds
    • Chopped green onions

Equipment:

  • Large skillet or wok

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, brown sugar, ginger, garlic, Buldak sauce, and sesame oil.
  2. Marinate the Beef: Add the sliced beef to the marinade, ensuring it's fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to several hours for deeper flavor.
  3. Cook the Beef: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Remove the beef from the marinade, reserving the marinade for later.
  4. Sear the Beef: Cook the beef in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Sear for 2-3 minutes per side, or until cooked through and slightly caramelized. Remove the cooked beef and set aside.
  5. Make the Sauce: Add the reserved marinade to the skillet. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  6. Thicken the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water to create a slurry. Add the slurry to the simmering marinade and stir continuously until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Combine and Serve: Return the cooked beef to the skillet and toss to coat with the thickened sauce. Cook for another minute or two, until the beef is heated through and the sauce is glossy.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Serve immediately over rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
